Chile Riding II - Volcano Adventure

Volcano Adventure South of Chile is well known for it volcanoes and its beautiful nature. This combined with the colourful South American culture makes a wonderful set up for a ski touring trip with a touch of Adventure. White volcanic cones rising from the green forests and blue lakes are the scenery of this tour.

In this journey we will do a road trip combining the most stunning volcanoes of South Chile. After arriving Temuco we drive to Curacauting region and start our Tour from the volcanoes of the araucarias area. First Lonquimay and Sierra Nevada then majestic Llaima.

After those we make a trip to south and climb Puyehue where we can ski into the crater. As a last stop we have the marvelous village Pucon with its volcano goals gloolḿing active Villarica and the huge and beautiful Lanin.

What a great way to start skiing season! and to get to know south of Chile at the same time.

Private transportation and the experience that we have from the zone makes it possible to fit the itinerary for the weather conditions.

Day 1
We meet at the Airport of Temuco at the early afternoon and start our road trip. We drive about 1,5h to our first accommodation at Canon Blanco
Day 2
First touch to snow! We drive up to skiing area of Corralco and ascent the volcano Lonquimay from there.
from there. (450m, 2,5h) The rest of the day we can ski in the Corralco skiing area. After the skiing day we come back to Canon Blanco.
Day 3
Sierra Nevada - The beautiful peak in the end of Blanco valley. A full day tour on this mountain majestic mountain (1400m, 6h) After the tour we drive to La Baita lodge in the foot of the Llaima Volcano.
Day 4
We ascent majestic Llaima from the east side. (1700m 7h) and return to the Baita lodge.
Day 5
We leave the Araucarias Region and drive to South and Stay the night close to Estancia Caulle at Puyehue volcano our next goal.
Day 6
From Estancia el Caulle we start trekking to the Refuge of the Volcan Puyehue (1000m, 3h). Our skitouring gear and camp equipment go up on a horseback. We stay the night on that refuge.
Day 7
Tour to the Crater. We ascent the mellow slopes of Puyehue and ski into the crater of that active
volcano. The slopes to the crater are marvellous and we might chose another line into it after
ascent back to the border. After unique crater skiing experience we ski back to the refuge
and stay the night there. (1500m, 6h)
Day 8
We descent from the hut (2h) to the car and drive to Pucon, the village at Villarica volcano.
Day 9
Villarica Volcano - a classic active volcano. We drive up to skiing area and ascent from there to the crater. If we are really lucky, we can see also lava inside the crater. (1200m 5h) We stay the night in Pucon.
Day 10
Today we are going to the king of the region , 3700m high beautiful Lanin volcano. We ascent the volcano from its Chilean side. The goal of the first day is to climb about 1300m to reach the high camp at 2500m. (5h) Night in the Camp.
Day 11
Ski ascent of Lanin. All the way up to this reel roof of the Lake district and 2600m descent back to car (1200m up and 6h). We return to Pucon and have our farewell dinner there.
Day 12
We drive back to Temuco and it is time to say goodbye.

The tour is addressed to back country skiers who already have some experience and good physical condition. Participants should be conditionally able to perform 5 hours climbs and about 7 hours total touring time on the day. Technically you should master descents off piste up to a slope of about 35 degrees. Mountaineering experience is not mandatory.

Ski touring is an high alpine activity in a terrain, risk of avalanches and stone fall is present. The daily goals can be more dificult or even impossible to reach upon unfavorable conditions (weather, snow, ice, fog, rain, storms, avalanches, lightning storms) Unfortunately also short-term occurrence of such conditions can happen in the high mountains in any season.

The tour will take place in Chile. Please ensure that you have adequate insurance protection! (Health insurance and an insurance policy that covers any possible rescue and recovery costs).
