Chile Riding I - Volcanoes and Araucaria Trees

South of Chile is well known for it volcanoes and its beautiful nature. This combined with the colourful South American culture makes a wonderful set up for a ski touring trip with a touch of Adventure. In this trip we concentrate to the Volcanoes of las Araucarias region where these millennial Araucaria trees are part of the scenery.

We start the road trip in Concepcion and head to the Nevados de Chillan Ski resort where we can have have nice and easy start to the trip using the ski lifts to support our tours during the first days.

After Chillan we head to south and making best out of the excellent variety of volcano descents. We always stay the night in the valleys making day tours enjoying the spring conditions of the zone. By doing that we do a scenic road trip through the area and get to know South of Chile.

The last goal of the tour, Villarica, an active volcano with its glaciers and smoking crater, is a breathtaking experience.

Private transportation and the experience that we have from the zone makes it possible to fit the itinerary for the weather conditions.

Day 1
We meet at the Airport of Concepcion at the early afternoon and start our trip. Yeah, it is tiring to sit
in the car after a long flight but it is worth it since we can have a the first dinner las Trancas next to Nevados de
Chillan enjoying the views to the mountains and knowing that tomorrow we can make the first
turns with our skis.
Day 2
On the skiis again! We use the facilities of the skiing area to ski off piste making perhaps a
short touring in the area to feel good on the skis again after the summer break. We stay the night in our lodging in Las Trancas.
Day 3
Tour to the Nevados de Chillan. From the skiing area we skin up the volcano an enjoy the skiing
down completing our first tour of the trip. We stay the night in Las Trancas.
Day 4
Time to change a Place and we drive to Antuco to our next destination.
Day 5
Day like on Altiplano: We drive up to Laguna Laja where the scenery is very similar to Altiplano. From there we make the skitour to Antuco volcano enjoying the fantastic views to the blue lake and surrounding open landscapes. After 1400m of descent fund we return to our lodging.
Day 6
Our road trip goas further to south and we drive to the heart of the Araucaria area, the valley of Curacautin. We stay the night there at the idyllic thermal bade Canon Blanco where our base for following days is going to be.
Day 7
Sierra Nevada - The beautiful peak in the end of Blanco valley. A full day tour on this mountain majestic mountain (1400m, 6h) Lodging back at Canon Blanco
Day 8
We make another day skiing area assisted. We drive to Corralco skiing area and do tour on Lonquimay volcano from there (450m, 2,5h). After the Tour we drive to Pucon to our last stop on the road trip.

Day 9 As the first tour from Pucon we climb up the Quetrupillan volcano - a top with great view and massive glacier in the crater. (1300m 5h)

Day 10 Villarica Volcano - a classic active volcano. We drive up to skiing area and ascent from there to the crater. If we are really lucky, we can see also lava inside the crater. (1200m 5h)

Day 11 We drive back to Temuco and it is time to say goodbye.

The tour is addressed to back country skiers who already have some experience and good physical condition. Participants should be conditionally able to perform 5 hours climbs and about 7 hours total touring time on the day. Technically you should master descents off piste up to a slope of about 30 degrees. Mountaineering experience is not mandatory.

Ski touring is an high alpine activity in a terrain, risk of avalanches and stone fall is present. The daily goals can be more dificult or even impossible to reach upon unfavorable conditions (weather, snow, ice, fog, rain, storms, avalanches, lightning storms) Unfortunately also short-term occurrence of such conditions can happen in the high mountains in any season.

The tour will take place in Chile. Please ensure that you have adequate insurance protection! (Health insurance and an insurance policy that covers any possible rescue and recovery costs).
