Avalanche Training Weekend

This course provides the basics of the avalanche knowledge and the avalanche victime rescue in a compact form. The content is not only aimed at beginners, but also for all winter sports enthusiasts, who want to refresh their know-how and prepare them well into the winter season.

Contents of the Training are: theory of the avalanche knowledge (nivology, assessment of the avalanche danger, decision strategies) theory and practice practice of the victime rescue in avalanche accidents. Dealing with different avalanche beacons, utilizing latest teachings and practices in the avalanche rescue. Planning and pactice of ski tours in the mountains.

The Course is situated in Kleinwalsertal in Allgäuer-Alps.
On both days we will do a tour to practice our kowledge in the mountains of the Kleinwalsertal. We will be on tour for about 3 to 6 hours. (about 1.5-3 hours uphill)
We also organize courses at your desired date.

Days 1-3: Meeting point in Baad in the Kleinwalsertal at 9:00 am. Avalanche knowledge in theory and practice. Practical exercises and exercise tour in the Kleinwalsertal. Overnight stay in a guesthouse / hotel / inn. End of the event on second day at 17:00
Course content:

Avalanche Basics: Interpretation of the avalanche report, hazard scale.
Avalanche accident: Basic considerations in hazard assessment.
Snow pack and its changes due to parameters such as weather, temperature, wind, rainfall
Assessment of slope steepness, exposure and its effects on the avalanche risk.
reduction methods
Application of standard avalanche equipment. Use and proper search with the avalanche beacon (Pieps)
Methods and tactics in the avalanche rescue. Rescue exercise
Tour planning, behavior in the terrain both in the ascent and in the descent.

No prior knowledge of avalanches is required. Experience of skiing off piste is necessary. Participants must be able to manage up to three-hour climbs and about 5 hours of total walking time per day

Skitourung is an high alpine activity in a terrain, risk of avalanches and stone and ice fall is present. The daily goals can be more dificult or even impossible to reach upon unfavorable conditions (weather, snow, ice, fog, rain, storms, avalanches, lightning storms) Unfortunately also short-term occurrence of such conditions can happen in the high mountains in any season.

The tour takes place in Ausria. Make sure that you have sufficent insurances for that area.
