The Roof of Europe with Skis - Skitouring Week in Caucasus with Elbrus

The ascent of Elbrus, with its 5642m the highest mountain in Europe, represents a top destination for every ski mountaineer! The extinct volcano with its wide glacier areas is climbed from the south over the normal route. In order to prepare well for the summit day, we do acclimatization tours in the charming Adyrsu valley.

Day 1: Flght with Aeroflot to Mineralnye Vody, where we arrive in the morning. Then continue to the Ullu-Tau Camp (2200m) into the Adyrsu Valley. In the evening briefing of the upcoming ski tour week.
Days 2-4: In order to prepare us optimally for the Elbrus,  we do extensive ski tours in the Adyrsu valley on the following days. The selection of the tours is adapted to the respective snow conditions. Possible destinations: Gumachi Pass (3582m), Chochat (3820m) or the Pik Trapezia (3697m). At the end of the third day of the tour, we will take a bus to Terskol (2100m) where we will stay in a hotel.
Climbs: 4 - 7 hrs / 1000 - 1500 Hm
Day 5: After breakfast we will take the gondola to Mir station at 3500m. From there either with a chairlift or with ski to the Botchkis (camp container) at 3850m where we spend the next night. After a break we continure with light Backpacks to Prijut 11 Hut (4100m). Over flat glacier slopes back down to the Botchkis. In good conditions an alternative route to ski to Krugozor station (3000m) is possible. Return with the lift.
Ascent: 2 or 3 hours / 250 or 600 Hm
Day 6: From the Botchkis we go to the comfortable Eco-Hut Leaprus at 3912m. These newly built residential units are the ideal starting point for the summit push on the Elbrus. Today we do the last acclimatizing tour to the Pastuchov Rock (4700m).
Ascent: 3 - 4 hrs / 850 Hm

Day 7: Today is the day! We starts very early. The first section up to the Pastuchov rocks we already know from the previous day. At the rocks we begin the long traverse to the saddle (5300m) between east and west summit. Especially in the morning, when the sun rises it can get really cold here. From the saddle there is stilla a push before the terrain finally gets flatter and the summit gets closer. At 5642m, the West Summit is the highest peak in Europe and one of the Seven Summits. The following decent is long and quite demanding descent to the Eco-Hut where we spend another night.
Optionally, this stage can be 600Hm shortened by a support of a Ratracs / Snowmobile by an additional charge
Ascent: 8 - 10 hrs / 1730 Hm
Day 8: A reserve day for another summit push. Alternative descent to the valley and relax.

Day 9: For the last day of tour we go freeriding at Chegnet or touring in Baksan valley. Farewell dinner in a traditional restaurant.

Day 10: Transfer to Mineralnye Vody airport and return home

This ski tour week is aimed at experienced ski mountaineers who have already performed tours with a Western Alps character. The tours require a very good basic condition for long tours. Despite the date in the spring, the Elbrus is expected to have very low temperatures and strong winds. In the case of black ice in the traverse, crampons and ice axes are used. A clean ski technique in the ascent and descent is a basic requirement. The accommodations on site are appropriate, but do not meet the western standards.

Ski touring is an high alpine activity in a terrainrisk of avalanches and stone fall is present. The daily goals can be more dificult or even impossible to reach upon unfavorable conditions (weather, snow, icefograin, stormsavalancheslightning storms) Unfortunately also short-term occurrence of such conditions can happen in the high mountains in any season.

The tour will take place in SwitzerlandPlease ensure that you have adequate insurance protection(Health insurance and an insurance policy that covers any possible rescue and recovery costs).
